The 5-Minute AI Visibility Test: Does ChatGPT Recommend Your Business?

5-minute AI visibility test to see if ChatGPT recommends your business

Your next customer may ask AI who to call before they ever visit your website. This simple five-minute test can help you see whether your business appears, what ChatGPT says about it, which competitors show up, and what information may need your attention.

Imagine someone in your area needs the exact service your business provides.

Instead of opening Google and scrolling through search results, they open ChatGPT and ask:

“Can you recommend three local businesses that provide this service near me?”

Would your business be one of the recommendations?

More importantly, if it did appear, would the information be accurate?

You do not need special software, a complicated report, or an understanding of how artificial intelligence works to get an initial idea.

You can start with a simple AI visibility test that takes about five minutes.

The goal is not to earn a score or prove that your business is “good at AI.” The goal is to see your business from the perspective of a potential customer using AI to find a company like yours.

What Is an AI Visibility Test?

An AI visibility test is a simple way to check how your business appears when someone asks an AI tool for a recommendation.

You are looking for a few basic things:

  • Does your business appear at all?
  • Which competitors are recommended?
  • What does AI say about your business?
  • Is that information accurate?
  • Which online sources are being used?

That last question is especially useful.

Depending on the AI tool and the search features available, an answer may reference websites, business profiles, directories, articles, reviews, and other publicly available information.

Looking at those sources can help you understand what information about your company is easy to find online.

Before You Begin: Think Like a Customer

One of the most important parts of this test is also one of the simplest:

Do not begin by searching for your company name.

If a customer already knows your company name, they have already found you.

This test is about discovering what happens when someone needs your service but has never heard of your business.

Think about the words a real customer might use.

They probably will not use industry terminology. They may describe a problem, a service they need, or the city where they are looking for help.

For example, instead of asking:

“Tell me about ABC Company.”

a potential customer might ask:

“Recommend three companies in Sarasota that provide IT support for small businesses.”

That second question gives you a much better picture of whether your business can be discovered by someone who does not already know you.

Step 1: Open ChatGPT With Web Search

Start by opening ChatGPT and using its web search capability so the answer can reference current information available online.

You do not need to change complicated settings or install anything special.

Before entering your question, decide on three things:

  • The type of business you operate.
  • The city or service area you want to test.
  • One important service a customer might need.

Keep the first test simple.

Step 2: Ask AI to Recommend Businesses Like Yours

Now ask ChatGPT a question that sounds like something a real customer would ask.

You can use this simple format:

“Recommend three [type of business] in [city] that specialize in [service]. Explain why you chose them and cite your sources.”

For example, an IT company might test:

“Recommend three IT companies in Sarasota that help small businesses with network support and cybersecurity. Explain why you chose them and cite your sources.”

A landscaping company might ask:

“Recommend three landscaping companies in Bradenton that provide commercial landscape maintenance. Explain why you chose them and cite your sources.”

A home services company could use the same format with its own city and specialty.

The exact wording is less important than making the question realistic.

Ask the way a customer would ask.

Step 3: Record What Appears

Once you receive the answer, do not focus only on whether your company made the list.

Take a minute to look at the entire response.

Write down:

  • Which businesses were recommended.
  • Whether your business appeared.
  • What reasons were given for each recommendation.
  • Which services were mentioned.
  • Which websites or other sources were cited.

If your company appears, that is useful information.

If your company does not appear, that is useful information too.

Look at the businesses that were included and pay attention to the information supporting those recommendations.

Does a competitor have a clear page dedicated to the service you searched for? Is its location easy to identify? Does it have useful content explaining the problem? Are trusted third-party sources mentioning that business?

You are not trying to copy another company. You are trying to understand what information is readily available to support an answer.

Step 4: Check Every Fact About Your Business

If your business appears in the answer, your next job is to verify what the AI says.

Check the basics first:

  • Is your company name correct?
  • Is the location correct?
  • Are your main services described accurately?
  • Does it mention services you no longer provide?
  • Is your website correct?
  • Are any important details outdated?

Then open the sources cited in the answer.

If your website contains accurate information but an old directory has a different phone number, address, or service description, you may have found something worth correcting.

Consistency matters because customers need to know which information they can trust.

Maintaining a clear website is an important part of that process. ODI Consulting provides web development, internet marketing, managed IT, networking, security, and other technology services for businesses that want their technology and online presence working together.

Step 5: Turn What You Find Into a Simple To-Do List

You have now completed the most important part of the test.

Do not turn the results into a huge project.

Instead, create a short list of anything that appears incomplete, inaccurate, or unclear.

Your list might include:

  • Correct an old phone number on a business listing.
  • Update an outdated address.
  • Add an important service that is missing from your website.
  • Make your service area clearer.
  • Improve a page that barely explains what you do.
  • Update an outdated company description.
  • Add useful answers to questions customers frequently ask.

Start with the most obvious factual problems.

If your phone number is wrong somewhere, fix it. If an important service is difficult to find on your website, make it clearer. If your company information differs across major online profiles, review those profiles.

Simple improvements can make your online presence clearer for people as well as the technology they use to research businesses.

Bonus Test: Try the Same Search on Google

Once you have finished your AI test, spend another few minutes searching for the same service on Google.

Again, do not search for your company name.

Use the type of search a customer might make, such as:

“Small business IT support Sarasota”

or:

“Cybersecurity company Bradenton FL”

Then compare what you see.

Does your company appear in Google but not in the AI response? Do the same competitors appear in both places? Are your business details accurate when you find them?

AI search and traditional search are not identical, so you should not expect the results to match exactly. The comparison simply gives you another useful view of your online presence.

ODI also helps businesses strengthen that presence through web solutions designed around how customers use the internet to find and evaluate companies.

Try More Than One Customer Question

Your customers do not all search the same way.

Once you understand the basic test, try two or three variations based on the services that matter most to your business.

An IT company, for example, could test:

  • “Who provides managed IT services for small businesses in Sarasota?”
  • “Recommend a cybersecurity company for a business in Bradenton.”
  • “Which local IT company can help with business network problems?”

Notice how each question expresses a slightly different need.

Your company might appear for one question but not another.

That does not necessarily mean something is wrong. It simply shows why a single search should never be treated as a final verdict on your visibility.

One Test Is a Snapshot, Not a Score

This is one of the most important things to remember about the exercise.

Do not treat one AI response as a permanent score for your business.

AI-generated answers can vary based on the exact question, the information available to the system, the sources it finds, the tool being used, and changes to information on the web.

Run the same test again later and you may receive a somewhat different answer.

That is why the most useful approach is to save a few realistic customer questions and repeat them periodically.

Look for patterns instead of obsessing over a single result.

What If Your Business Does Not Appear?

Do not panic, and do not immediately assume that you need a complicated “AI strategy.”

Start with the basics.

Review your website and ask:

  • Does it clearly say what your business does?
  • Does it clearly identify the areas you serve?
  • Does each important service have enough useful information?
  • Is your contact information current?
  • Can someone quickly understand why they should contact you?

Then look at important business profiles and other places where your company appears online.

Your goal is not to create information specifically for a machine.

Your goal is to make your business easy to understand and verify online.

What If AI Gets Your Business Information Wrong?

This is another reason the test is valuable.

If ChatGPT describes your business incorrectly, investigate where that information may be coming from.

Look at the cited sources when they are provided. Check your own website. Search for outdated profiles or directory listings. Make sure important information is consistent.

Correcting inaccurate information is useful even beyond AI. A customer can be just as confused by an old address or incorrect phone number as an AI system can.

Your Five-Minute AI Visibility Checklist

Here is the entire exercise in one place:

  1. Open ChatGPT with web search. Decide which service and location you want to test.
  2. Ask like a customer. Request recommendations for your type of business without mentioning your company name.
  3. Record the results. Note which businesses appear, what is said about them, and which sources are used.
  4. Verify the information. If your business appears, check every important fact. If it does not, study the evidence supporting the businesses that do.
  5. Create a priority list. Correct inaccurate facts, clarify missing service information, and strengthen weak or outdated online information.

Then, if you have another few minutes, repeat the customer search on Google and compare what you find.

Make Your Business Easier to Understand Online

AI may be changing how people search, but one basic principle has not changed:

Your business needs clear, accurate, useful information online.

A potential customer should be able to understand what you do, where you work, how you can help, and how to contact you.

The five-minute AI visibility test gives you a simple way to see whether that information is coming through when someone searches in a new way.

And if you discover problems, you now have something much more useful than a vague concern about “AI.”

You have a practical list of things you can improve.
